The Long Ryders are an American rock ‘n roll band formed in Los Angeles in 1981. They are often credited as founders of the alt-country movement. The band’s highly original roots rock recipe blends the punk rock spirit of the Ramones, the soul of Merle Haggard, the cosmic country of Gram Parsons and beautiful jangle of The Byrds into their own uniquely American musical experience.

For 2026 the Long Ryders have a new single out, Four Winters Away, with a new album out March 13th entitled High Noon Hymns. Produced again by Ed Stasium, the album is a consolidation of the classic Long Ryders sound of country licks over a punk rock rhythm with passionate melodic singing.

There is nothing quite like the Long Ryders live, not back then and certainly not now. Go see them for the musical ride of your life. Be part of rock ‘n’ roll history and write your own chapter at one of their shows. Get there early and hang on tight.

Story: Is AI Going To...?

“Now keep looking at this unpleasant situation until you realize that it isn’t causing the negative emotions. It is you that insists you react with negative emotions. Don’t stop till you have grasped this truth: The only reason why you are not reacting calmly is you stubbornly insist reality conforms to your norm."
-Anthony De Mello
AI is in the news. The predicted outcomes range from solving all of our problems to exterminating us. That pretty much covers the entire range from most positive to most negative. Maybe that wide range of possibilities feels a bit abstract, irrelevant, what do I worry about? Let's bring it on home, break it down and make it more germane: how does AI affect jobs in music?

First, some Apps are creating realistic sounding parts and even 'writing' legitimate sounding songs. Second, there are other Apps which create stems from a song that allow you to solo the part you are learning or play along with the original band sans your instrument. So, some Apps compete and others help. On top of that, it seems AI improves everyday, and already most non-musicians already can't differentiate human musicians from AI.
I'm old enough to remember the sense of panic that some drummers felt in the '80's as drum machine and programers starting creating beats and loops. Drummers were out, machine were in. The next crisis was sampling. Many producers sampled songs and used those parts in new compositions. The unfortunate and familiar thread is that many musicians lose out on a paying gig, but the good news is that we still need drummers.

The right side of the chart at the top shows that jobs in the performing arts have increased since the launch of Chat GPT. The left side shows that motion picture and sound recording jobs have decreased. To date, performing gigs are up and recording gigs are down. If you perform in front of an audience, this is potentially good news; if recording is your career, it's might be time to better differentiate yourself from the AI. Though, I'm not sure exactly how you might go about doing this.

Bottom Line: Reality never conforms; adapt or find another career.

As long as there are musicians like Herbie Hancock et al, AI doesn't stand a chance. 😉
