All of what goes on in this reality is all just in your head. And usually, what goes on in your head is your own doing. If for the most part you can avoid allowing the action of others to dominate your thoughts, you can live a simpler and easier life. Just master this skill: avoid thoughts that you have no control over, especially those things which are random or irrelevant. The one caveat Aurelius offers is, "unless it affects the common good."

How to define the common good? Who should it benefit? Do we go as broad as all human beings or as narrower? Do we limit it by ethnic, national, or religious affiliation? I propose that anything narrower than the choice of human being, in practice, limits your ability to feel empathy and compassion for people outside of your affiliation. Unfortunately it seems most affiliations often have nothing to do with conscious choice. Most are random, based on birth, tradition, or other societal conventions. Tradition seems to be the way society and its institutions validate ignorance.
Marcus Aurelius also says, "what harms the hive, injuries the bee." If a part of our global human hive is harmed, do we all suffer? Why or why not? And for how long does this go on with each side pointing fingers like children and accusing, "they started it!" But like Aurelius says, you don't need to share my opinion, just care for all human beings.
