Story: Year Review

"New goals don't deliver new results. New lifestyles do. And a lifestyle is a process, not an outcome.”
―James Clear, author Atomic Habits

While change can be stressful, periods of change also offer many opportunities. You just have to be open to change and not so stuck on one goal. For me, the practice of setting New Year's resolutions has not worked. Goals are great, but as Clear says, they don't always deliver the desired results. What you're after is a lifestyle that delivers the results you desire.
And with that in mind, here are 4 ideas that you can use to winnow down what works best for you to help you achieve your goals for 2026 and beyond.

Year-End Review

One non-goal oriented way to think about your life is to reflect on your 'strong' experiences of the past year. Take note of the ones that stand out, both positive and negative. Fill your calendar with as many of the strong positives as you can. Call friends, make plans, and prepay for activities like music lessons or the gym. Next, remove the negative and make sure you're focused on filling the newly created spaces with positives. Guard against filling the voids you just created with BS and 'feel good' noise.

Pareto Principle - 80/20 Rule

The Pareto principle states that, for most outcomes, 80% of results come from 20% of effort. A good way to apply this is to write down what you do and focus only on the 20% that gives you the desired results. You can apply this principle to business, music, and even happiness. Identify the 20% of your relationships that drive 80% of your happiness, then spend more time developing those relationships. Concentrate your efforts only on the things that produce desired results.

Will Power vs Habits

Will power is great when starting out any new program that you expect to deliver changes in your life. Whether it's an exercise program, a diet, or a new practice schedule, will power gets us through anywhere from a week to a few months. At some point you might not feel like following your new plan, skip a day or two, and then you may think, I guess I don't have enough will power. A better approach is to build habits that keep you locked into your new program. Building good habits is a better way to stay on track.

Waiting vs Building Mindset

Stop waiting for the perfect time to begin and start taking small steps now to work towards your goal. Don't say, "I'll start when I have more time," instead say, "I have enough time now to take one step towards my goal." The waiting mindset wants to be perfect, wants to avoid failure, always wants to look good; the building mindset says just start, don't worry at first how you look or how well you can do something. It's more important to take the first step than to wait.

Bonus Idea

Since you're reading this after New Year's, this idea is for next year. If you find that none of the above ideas worked for you, count down to the New Year standing on your left foot, when you reach the New Year, switch feet, at least you'll start off the New Year on the right foot.

Bottom Line: We thank you for your business and wish you a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2026!
