"When you are content to be simply yourself and don't compare or compete, everybody will respect you."
―Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching
By now, statistics say that nearly 80% of you will not be following your New Year's resolution. Where do you stand? Don't let a few off days derail your plans. And if you didn't get started, don't let an arbitrary date like the first of the year have anymore significance than today. Just get started.

Consistent and deliberate practice enlarges your ability to accomplish things above your base level of talent. The world is full of stories about people that have applied themselves single-mindedly to their life's ambition and exceeded all expectations; there are as many stories of naturally talented, can't miss prospects that fail to rise to journeyman status.
Good habits like practicing regularly, studying, preparing for rehearsals and gigs, etc, stock pile ease; bad habits like procrastination, only doing the minimum/only what is necessary, skipping a review of tonight's set list, bring on the pain. When you prepare in advance it gives you a buffer when something unexpected occurs; just getting by with the bare minimum gives you zero margin for error, and one unexpected turn can put you into crisis mode.
Your knowledge, in general and specifically about your craft as a musician, is based on your experiences; your decisions are based on your assumptions of the future. You live an illusion that your knowledge of the past will adequately inform your decisions about the future.
Bottom Line: What can you do everyday, even on your worst day? Start there. Show up everyday.
