Story: Rise Above It

In a scene from “Spinal Tap,” Nigel confronts Ian Faith, the band manager, with a problem. Nigel is obviously upset, and Ian shows concern and asks if there was a problem with sound check. Nigel says no, it’s the food, specifically the bread is too small for the meat. As Nigel grows more upset and Ians says, “I don’t want this to affect your performance.” Nigel’s responds that he'll rise above it, he's a professional.

It’s a humorous scene over a trivial problem that sheds light on an important aspect of being a professional. Namely, no matter the condition or situation, performing your job to professional standards is the primary objective.
Do you allow minor inconveniences to become large problems? On the stage, or in life, there are going to be obstacles that get in your way if you let them. If you fixate on something, it can grow into something larger. The fixation can consume a disproportionate amount of your psyche, impeding your ability to move on. Focusing on the obstacle becomes your obsession. Often, you need to resolve it before you can move on. Most likely the obstacle in our way was not under our control, but remember your response to it is. With an acknowledgement that this is the way it is —for now— you can regain control by accepting the situation and doing your best.
How you react to unforeseen obstacles is a measure of your professionalism. Do you react with grace and courage, or do minor annoyances become an excuse for unprofessional conduct? This is especially important in public where the difference between one professional musician and another is slim, and a big deciding factor is how a person “fits” into the touring community of the band. Even tempered, rational behavior is often the most overlooked skill that you can learn and develop, and it is a trait that is often valued by the management and the person whose name is on the marquee.
