Story: What Stands In Your Way?

“The impediments to action advances action; what stands in the way becomes the way.”
―Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 5.20

Without resistance, real work is next to impossible. Imagine trying to get stronger by lifting the lightest object you can find, trying to train yourself to run faster by taking a stroll. I don't think you'd see much improvement. Add resistance, a heavy weight, or running hard, and you might see improvement.
On a higher level, what stands in your way, is the way. You may need to climb over, go around, or render it in two. It doesn't matter how you conquer it, your solution becomes the way, your path forward.

I mostly avoid the obstacle standing in my way because there always seems to be many other options to move forward. But over any meaningful amount of time, when I check my current heading against my plotted course, I find often a significant course deviation. Though I avoided the obstacle, outsmarted it even, I now find myself with a gap in plotted verse actual course. That gap is my new obstacle. And usually, the course correction required puts me face to face with the same obstacle I worked to avoid in the first place.

I think the way we deal with this gap can say a lot about how you gauge your life satisfaction and happiness. Some seem content to to drift, let the wind blow them off course, allowing the fates to determine their path; others are more determined to stay on their charted course and work towards the outcomes imagined. Happiness can be found in both wandering as well as climbing a mountain. Which suits you best?

Bottom Line: What stands in your way that you need to confront?
