Story: Two Words to Live By

"Persist and resist."
-Epictetus

“Two words,” Epictetus says, “should be committed to memory and obeyed by alternatively exhorting and restraining ourselves, words that will ensure we lead a mainly blameless and untroubled life.” Those two words are persist and resist.

Some interpret this as Epictetus encouraging us to persist through hardship and use our self-control to resist the things we ought to avoid. His advice works best when we choose and apply good values like honestly, courage, reliability, integrity, friendship, love, work/life balance, etc to life situations. Sometimes being honest is not easy and we need to resist the temptation to skirt the truth to remain true to our values.

One could also interpret it as meaning to accept life's obstacles as part of our path and resisting negativity and distractions. Progress in life is not always in a straight line from A to B. Your path can zig and zag, throw you set backs, but you can't tell what is actual forward progress until you cover enough distance. You may encounter negativity and distractions, either external or internal. Do your best to avoid those traps. Remember to celebrate all successes whether big or small, and avoid the indulgence of losing self-control.

Bottom Line: Stick to your path, avoid the distractions, never give up.
