Sid Griffin

BIO
Sid Griffin is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and bandleader. He led The Long Ryders in the 1980s, founded The Coal Porters in the 1990s, and has recorded several solo albums. He's also written two books about Bob Dylan, and one apiece on Gram Parsons and bluegrass music.

He was the leader of The Long Ryders, a Paisly Underground band, that was THE number one indie/alternative band in the 1980s. While often called an alt-country band, the group's guitar sound was influenced by The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and The Flying Burrito Brothers yet with a harder edge due to Sid's roots in punk music.

With only a thirty-three year gap (!) between albums the Long Ryders returned to the rodeo with Psychedelic Country Soul in February 2019. It was the number one album on Britain’s official Alt-Country-Americana chart and was Amazon UK’s number one Americana album too. Click here to read the incredible reviews.

Sid's Gear

Sid uses a Pickboy Ceramic 1.00mm pick because it "never leaves your hand due to perspiration, is balanced perfectly and the THWACK it makes against the string itself never dominates the sound."

Pick:Ceramic 1.00mm
In the 1990s Sid formed The Coal Porters. Initially rooted in the 60's alt- country sound, the group has evolved as Sid moved to London and The Coal Porters are now an exciting and dynamic bluegrass combo with Sid on vocals, mandolin, harmonica and autoharp.

The Trick Is To Breathe is Sid Griffin's most recent solo album. Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee at the home studio of Thomm Lutz in February 2014 it was a joyous, easy and (almost) carefree session, the entire album completed in four days.

"I recorded The Trick Is To Breathe in the USA instead of Europe, I did not engineer or co-produce, so I put myself in the hands of others, I did not use any of the Coal Porters' vast musical talents, I primarily used musicians I had not met before the sessions and I enjoyed myself thoroughly. Without question it was time for a change, time to shake things up."

Some guys got it all. Sid has the Long Ryders for a rock band project and his solo troubadour side too. And he plays bluegrass mandolin! The Trick Is To Breathe announced Sid Griffin being back on the world stage as a solo artist, globe-trotting troubadour and singer-songwriter. Psychedelic Country Soul announced the Long Ryders were back to stay. Truly, some guys got it all.

Welcome aboard, Sid!
