David Ullmann
BIO
New York-based guitarist-composer David Ullmann has assembled an all-star quintet for the recording of his second album as a group leader, Falling, a collection of seven new Ullmann compositions and a DownBeat Editors’ Pick for September 2012.
Ullmann is a guitarist, composer, teacher, and lifelong New Yorker. A graduate of the New School Jazz program, he has performed extensively in and around New York City and the northeast. He also teaches guitar at John Jay College in Manhattan.
His debut album, Hidden, was released in 2005: “Hidden is an exciting record that reflects restless creativity. Each track builds on the next and works to keep the listener on guard and engaged. This dynamism leads to a satisfying sense of taking a journey as the record plays” (All About Jazz).
His second album Falling, released in August 2012, features a new lineup: Chris Dingman on vibes, Gary Wang on bass, Karel Ruzicka Jr. on sax, and Vinnie Sperrazza on drums. To ensure that his playing was pushed in a radical direction on this latest release, he chose to work with improvisers who would challenge him, and, ultimately, elevate his new compositions in unpredictable ways. From the dream-like passages of “When,” where Sperrazza’s cymbal groove leads to fiery solos by Ullmann, Ruzicka Jr., and Dingman, to the blissful display of collective melody that unfolds on “Gesture,” Falling is a musical journey. Says Ullmann. “I really wanted to capture the idea of getting lost within the music—to explore falling into some mood, or sound, and being temporarily transported.”
The album has been well received by critics, with reviews in DownBeat Magazine, eMusic, Capital Bop, and Philadelphia City Paper. “Throughout the album, Ullmann’s restrained, tasteful solos display the narrative arc of a veteran storyteller—a quality he shares with his perfect foil, Dingman” (Bobby Reed, DownBeat).
David also composes music for film, most recently completing the score for "The Happy House," a feature film by D.W. Young. David's first film project, Atsushi Funahashi's "Echoes," won three Jury and Audience Awards at Annonay International Film Festival in France and the High Hope Award at the Munich International Film Festival.
David is simultaneously working on two other albums. Stay tuned for details.
