| | Story: You Choose Your Future with Actions Today"If you add only a little to a little and do this often, soon that little will become great." –Hesiod | Every day you wake up and choose what you do and by doing so choose your future self. Your present self is the byproduct of a lifetime of decisions and habits culminating in the current you. How you were raised, your values, your education, your choice of friends, your daily routine, etc. all can predict, but do not determine who you are today. Like it or not, you are who you are. The good news is that you can change by focusing on your daily habits and only keeping the ones that lead you to your ideal future self. | | It’s a huge task with many benefits. Start by making a list of your daily routine. At first, stick to big items to avoid getting lost in the details. Next, evaluate which habits produce the best results moving you towards your ideal future self. If your goal is to be first call studio musician and you don’t have designated time to practice, then there is less likelihood you will realize your ideal future self. Make time to practice or give up on that ideal self.
Next, eliminate habits which are not helping you realize your future self. One way to influence change is to use the trigger that initiates a non-productive habit to become the trigger that gets you to reach for your instrument. Another helpful tip is to visualize your day. Like visualizing yourself on stage performing a song and mentally playing each note, you can do the same for your ideal day. This can help reinforce the order of your day, the triggers that move you to the next productive habit, and the successful completion of all the things you want to accomplish.
Creating a schedule works for some people. It helps to visualize and quantify how much time you spend and need to spend on various aspects of your life. Do you really work for 8 hours, or do you spend 3 of those hours on social media? Finding thirty minutes five times a week to practice adds up to two and a half hours a week and 125 hours a year. Compare that to how much time you spent scrolling on your phone over the last year.
To realize a future self that is more aligned with your ideal self takes time. You’ve been working on your current self for your entire life. It won’t take that long to create a new future self, but patience is required. The act of going through this exercise is a start to creating your new future self. Hopefully you become more aware of habits that have a negative impact and have a starting point to initiate change.
Bottom Line: Be kind to yourself. It’s the journey, not the destination. |
