Story: The Shape of Your Mind
Your mind will take the shape of what you frequently hold in thought, for the human spirit is colored by such impressions."
–Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, 5.16
Unlike water, which fills any container, I think Marcus is saying your mind is more like clay that can be molded and hold a shape. When water is poured into a vessel it conforms to the shape of the vessel. Clay on the other hand needs to be physically molded to conform to a new shape. There are advantages to both. Is one a better or more desirable property than the other?

First let's think about our body rather than our mind. If we contort ourselves into an uncomfortable position often and for long enough, our body will begin to conform to that shape. We see the effects of this in work and repetitive stress injuries. Foot binding was a Chinese custom where the feet of young girls were broken and bound so to give them small and narrow feet. We can see with our bodies that we can injure it by contorting it into unnatural positions. Some of these injuries are easier than others to remedy.
Now imagine your mind. If you are always surrounded by negative people and thinking, does negativity become your default way of dealing with the world? Just like poor posture affects our bodes, negative thinking affect our minds. Studies show that when prisoners are released from solitary confinement many of them find it difficult to reintegrate and socialize with other inmates. They became accustom to solitary living and their mind took the shape of and accepted solitary confinement. When presented with more freedom, the prisoners couldn't handle it.
Any situation has the power to influence your thoughts and make an impression on your mind. Remember to remain mindful of your circumstances and use your reason to evaluate your situation as best as you can. Since we are stuck with the nature of our minds, the best we can do is guard our minds against damaging situations.
Bottom Line: Experience and thoughts shape our mind and character. |
