Story: Unlocking Creativity
"Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.”
–Scott Adams, creator Dilbert
Creativity is the engine we use to build our world. With it we create works of art, music, buildings, machines, and so many other things. It is a magical blend of intelligence, imagination, and insight. With it, humans have transformed the world and the human condition. Yet it remains a mystery to most of us, even those of us that use our creativity to earn a living.
A friend asked me and another friend who is a painter how he could train himself to be creative. He himself is a programmer and is quite creative in his own right as he has created a fitness app that is available on Apple watches. The insights we offered into our creative process included creating a time a space where you can go everyday to do your creative work. While that sounds counter to the myth of the artist waiting for inspiration to strike, it seems the best way to consistently produce results is to sit down and create your art everyday.
Some tips we offered. First, find the time of day when you feel most creative and set that as your creative time. Secondly, make sure other people in your life know it is your creative time and know to respect your space. And lastly, don't be too critical of what you produce, the goal here is to consistent effort. Eventually, if you stick with it, you will get results. What works for you?
